Syed Salman Husaini Nadwi: Islamic scholar
Salman Husaini Nadwi (born 1952) is a prominent Indian Islamic scholar, author, and educator known for his extensive contributions to Islamic scholarship and community leadership. He has written numerous books in Arabic and Urdu and has long served as the Dean of the Faculty of Dawah at Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, one of India’s leading Islamic seminaries in Lucknow. Beyond his academic role, Nadwi holds several important positions, including Chairman of Dr. Abdul Ali Unani Medical College and Hospital, Chancellor of Darul Uloom Syed Ahmad Shaheed in Katoli, and President of Jamiat Shabaab ul-Islam. He has also played a key role in establishing multiple institutions across India, including medical, IT, and engineering colleges. Additionally, he edits and co-edits 13 scholarly periodicals in English, Urdu, Persian, and Arabic, reflecting his wide-ranging intellectual engagement.
Born in 1954 in Lucknow, Nadwi belongs to a lineage tracing back to Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. His mother was the niece of the eminent Islamic scholar Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadwi (Ali Miyan), whose guidance deeply shaped his intellectual and spiritual upbringing. Salman Nadwi received his early education at Nadwatul Ulama, where he memorized the Qur’an and pursued advanced Islamic studies. He completed his master’s degree in Hadith in 1976, later continuing his academic pursuits at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh under the mentorship of renowned scholars, including the celebrated muhaddith Abd al-Fattah Abu Ghuddah.
Throughout his career, Nadwi has been actively involved in community-building initiatives. He founded the Jam’iat Shabaab al-Islam, now among India’s most dynamic Islamic organizations, and contributed to establishing Madrasat al-Imam Ahmad ibn Irfan al-Shahid al-Islamiyyah. However, his 2014 proposal to the Saudi government advocating the creation of a 500,000-strong Sunni militia generated significant controversy, drawing criticism both nationally and internationally.
A prolific writer, institution-builder, and teacher, Salman Husaini Nadwi remains an influential figure in contemporary Islamic scholarship, shaping religious thought and educational initiatives across the Muslim world.
