Abul Qasim Nomani: Islamic Scholar, Academic
Abul Qasim Nomani (1940) born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, is a distinguished Indian Islamic scholar and one of the most respected contemporary figures of the Deobandi school. He currently serves as the Vice-Chancellor (Mohtamim) and Sheikh al-Hadith of Darul Uloom Deoband, one of the world’s most renowned Islamic seminaries. His lifelong contributions to Islamic education, hadith scholarship, and institutional leadership have earned him a place among the 500 Most Influential Muslims globally.
Nomani began his formal Islamic studies in 1960 at Darul Uloom Mau, where he completed his foundational education. In 1962, he advanced to Miftahul Uloom Mau, further strengthening his understanding of classical Islamic sciences. His academic journey reached its pinnacle when he joined Darul Uloom Deoband in 1963 for higher studies. There, under the guidance of eminent scholars, he completed his graduation in 1967, emerging as a promising scholar known for his discipline, humility, and deep grasp of hadith literature.
Recognizing his scholastic calibre, Darul Uloom Deoband inducted him into its highest decision-making body, the Majlis ash-Shura, in 1992. This marked the beginning of his significant administrative involvement in shaping policies and safeguarding the seminary’s traditions.
On July 24, 2011, following the departure of Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi, Nomani was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband. His leadership has been characterized by a commitment to preserving the institution’s intellectual heritage while guiding it through modern-day challenges faced by Muslim educational institutions in India. His appointment as Sheikh al-Hadith on October 14, 2020, further solidified his authority in hadith sciences, a discipline central to the Deobandi curriculum.
Beyond administration, Nomani continues to teach, mentor, and inspire a new generation of scholars. His influence reflects his unwavering dedication to Islamic learning, moral integrity, and the preservation of authentic scholarly traditions. Under his stewardship, Darul Uloom Deoband remains a vital center of Islamic thought, attracting students and scholars from across the world.
